Fortis College in Houston has been preparing students for careers in health care since 1991. The campus now has expanded its career education options to include an Associate of Applied Science degree program in Healthcare Management.
Healthcare managers, who also may be called healthcare executives or administrators, plan, direct and coordinate medical and health services for hospitals and clinics, as heads of specific departments in those facilities, or may manage a medical practice for a group of physicians.
Fortis College-Houston currently is enrolling students for classes that will start soon. As a “bridge” program, the Associate of Applied Science in Healthcare Management requires students to have successfully completed the equivalent of 46 quarter credits in such healthcare programs as Medical Assisting, Dental Assisting, Medical Billing and Coding, Medical Office Administration or Medical Office Basic X-Ray Technician, and have obtained some practical experience while working in the healthcare industry.
“An Associate’s Degree in Healthcare Management would enable graduates to advance their careers by qualifying for work as case management assistants, clinic operations managers, client service coordinators, and home health service managers, for example,” said campus President Sidney Carey, who added, “Candidates recently were being recruited in the Houston metro area for those positions, and more.”
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook (Jan. 8, 2014), employment of medical and health services managers is projected to grow by 23 percent through 2022, much faster than average job growth. The BLS forecasts the career should continue to grow as demand for medical services increases.
Fortis College’s Healthcare Management program consists of courses in business, healthcare administration, and general education. The businesses courses provide a background in accounting, finance, organizational behavior and human resource management, while general educations classes help develop and enhance critical thinking, problem-solving skills and oral and written communication abilities, among other career-related aptitudes.
“The program will stimulate learning and provide hands-on experience under the direction of experienced professionals so graduates receive instruction in all the administrative skills they need to reach their full potential,” Carey said. “That’s the ‘Fortis Difference,’ a measurable approach to providing students the highest quality education experience possible.”
In late 2013, Fortis College moved into a fully renovated campus with new classrooms, updated laboratories that utilize the latest equipment and healthcare technology, and available space for program expansion. Located at 1201 West Oaks Mall, Houston, TX 77082, the campus offers skilled trades, healthcare and medical career education and training, with programs in Healthcare Management, Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC-R), Medical Assisting, Medical Billing and Coding Specialist, Sterile Processing Technician, and Surgical Technology, as well as Phlebotomy Certification.
